“R” value rates the thermal efficiency, or the insulation value.
Insulated garage doors have different “R” values, the higher the number the better the thermal
efficiency or insulation the door provides. Insulated garage doors can greatly improve the
energy efficiency of your home. When considering a new garage door, think about the fact that
the garage door is the largest opening in your home. Installing a insulated garage door with a
high “R” value can have a dramatic impact on utility bills, and provide a more comfortable place

In addition, Insulated doors with a high R value are tend to be quieter than a standard aluminum door.
The “R” Value is determined by the thickness of the door and by the materiel that the insulation is made
of. For example Clopay has few different types of 3 lyres door (Steel Back Door) and the R value rated
between 9-18.4, the difference between the R values is caused by the thickness of the doors 1 model is
1.3/8″ and the other model is 2″. Another thing that effecting the R value is the material of the insulation.
There are mainly 2 materials for insulating garage doors Polystyrene and Polyurethane. The
polyurethane is a better insulator and therefor gives a higher R value then the Polyurethane.
