Wooden garage door require different hardware than do their steel counterparts. On steel garage doors, self tapping screws or bolts. These type of screws/bolts are used only for steel garage doors.
Wooden garage doors require carriage bolts with nuts to hold hinges and other items in place. If you attempt to use self tapping screws/bolts in wood doors, the screw/bolt will strip out of the wood. This is due in part to the weight of the wooden garage door, but also to the wood itself. The wood will fail if the screw/bolt is only screwed into the wood with no nut to hold it in place. The carriage bolt goes through a predrilled hole then the hinge or other item is placed over the bolt and then a lockwasher and nut is tightened onto the carriage bolt to hold the hinge or other item secure to the garage door. Sometimes the carriage bolt is hidden inside the panels of the garage door, where it can not be seen and the hinge then lockwasher and bolt attached. These can be difficult if the carriage bolt strips out making it difficult to remove and replace the lockwasher and nut because the carriage bolt spins in the hole.
