Best Springs for Garage Door

Types of Garage Door Springs

The two types of garage door springs are torsion springs and extension springs. Torsion springs are located above the door opening. They work by twisting when the door is opened or closed.

Extension springs are situated above the tracks on either side of the door. They work by stretching as the door moves up or down.

Torsion springs are very common among springs used in residential garage doors. They are designed to use torque to lift the door and are attached above the opening of the garage.

When under force, the torsion spring coils twist and store energy. This energy releases when the door is opened, thus lifting the door with little effort. Garage door springs typically last for 10-15 years but can be replaced if they break or become damaged.

Extension springs work by stretching and contracting as the door is opened and closed. The springs are attached to the door at one end and a bracket at the other.

As the door opens, the springs stretch and store energy. As the door closes, the springs contract and release that energy, helping to close the door.

While extension springs can be beneficial in opening and closing a garage door, they can also be very dangerous. If they break, they can cause significant injury and, in some cases, even death.

That’s why it’s essential to have them inspected regularly by a professional and replace them when they show signs of wear.

What are the best springs for garage doors?

The best springs for garage doors will last a long time and not break frequently.

For example, springs made of coated steel are corrosion-resistant and do not lose tension quickly. These springs have all the parts needed to maintain pressure and will not need to be replaced as often.

Unlike galvanized torsion springs, these springs will not rust and last for years.

Torsion vs. Extension Springs. What should you choose?

The torsion spring system is the most reliable among garage door systems. A coated spring is an excellent option for being safer than extension springs and lasting longer.

Compared to standard torsion and extension springs, springs with coatings last about twice as long.

Because a torque spring is self-contained, it is safer than an extension spring.

Because torsion springs are wrapped around the header bar, they will not turn into projectiles when they break.

Occasionally, safety cables are fitted with extension springs. Extension springs without safety cables, on the other hand, are the most dangerous because they can also break and fall.

An out-of-control flight can result from a force-extended spring breaking. Damage to property and injuries to people have been caused by broken extension springs.
