If I add insulation to my garage door do I need to change my springs as well ?

Remember the weight of the garage door determines the spring(s) needed to safely open and close your garage door, and to properly balance your garage door.

If you are adding a batting style insulation that will be adding less than 10 pounds total to your 16×7 door (Double car garage) then you may not need to change out the spring(s) to accommodate the added weight.

If you are adding foam board insulation or spray insulation (which I don not recommend spray insulation) then yes the door will definitely need to be weighed and new spring(s) installed as you will be adding a significant amount of weight to the garage door.

The spring system is the counterbalance for the weight of the garage door and any time you are adding more than about 10 pounds of weight the spring(s) should be changed out to provide safe operation of the garage door and to prevent damage to the opener or other components in the garage door system.  Even adding only 10 pounds of weight to the garage door can require a larger spring(s). Be sure you check for proper door balance. If the door is not balanced then you will need to replace the spring(s) as well.

Example #1 You have an 8×7 door that weighs 80 pounds and the door has a 207x2x22.5 spring you add the insulation that adds a total of 10 pounds to the door making the door weigh 90 pounds so we need to change the spring to a 207x2x20 to compensate for the additional weight of the garage door.

Example #2 You have a 16×7 door that weighs 160 pounds with a 250x2x28 spring and you add insulation adding 25 pounds to the over garage door weight. The door now weighs 185 pounds so you need to change the spring to a two spring system (Before it was only one spring system with 250x2x28) with 207x2x20 to compensate for the additional weight off the garage door.

Again you want a garage door that is balanced so that it will function safely and will not cause premature failure to your garage door opener or other components in the garage door system.
