How to Paint Your Garage Door By Yourself

Follow the steps mentioned below and adjust the steps according to your needs and the material of the garage door.

  1. First, you’ll need to scrape off any old paint or other debris on the door. Scraping off old paint can help the new paint adhere better. It can also allow you to inspect the door for any damage that needs to be repaired. Next, sand the door down with medium-grit sandpaper until it’s smooth. If your door is made of vinyl or wood, you’ll need to avoid damaging the material as you scrape and sand it.
  2. Next, you have to wash the garage door. Fortunately, cleaning a garage door is easy. Dish soap is excellent for removing dirt and grease. Wet the door with the hose, then apply the soap with a sponge or brush. Scrub the door thoroughly, then rinse it off.
  3. Once the door is clean, allow it to dry completely in the open position. If you’re painting a wooden garage door, check for smoothness after it dries. If it’s not smooth, you may need to sand it again.
  4. Taping off your garage door is an essential step in painting your garage door. If you take the time to tape off the door, you can avoid getting paint on hardware, windows, trim, gaskets, and anything else you don’t want to get color on.

To tape off your garage door:

  1. Start by removing any hardware from the door.
  2. Use painter’s tape to cover the trim around the door.
  3. Cover the windows with painter’s tape or plastic sheeting.
  4. Use painter’s tape or a foam brush to seal gaps between the door and the frame.

  1. Stir your primer and pour a little into a handheld paint pail. Next, use an angled paintbrush to paint each panel’s inside details carefully. Finally, wipe any excess primer off the rails and stiles before moving on to the next panel.
  2. Once the panels are done, use a 6-inch roller frame fitted with a 3/8-inch nap roller to prime the rails and stiles. You have to work in small sections to maintain a wet edge. Let the primer dry completely before painting or staining the door.
  3. Once the primer coat is dry, use the same process to apply exterior paint on your garage door. For the best paint job, apply at least two coats of paint. Give time for the paint to dry after each coat. If you’re unsure what color to choose, consider a neutral shade that will complement the other colors on your home’s exterior. You can give your garage door a whole new look with a bit of time and effort.
